Hiking & Biking
If you're not planning on hiking and/or biking, you're probably not planning a trip to Yellowstone. Near the South Entrance (where you'll be staying!), you'll find incredible trails for hiking, such as the South Boundary Trail (7.9 miles one-way) and Grassy Lake Trailhead. You will also have easy access to the Lower Loop, which leads to all the famous spots such as Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Spring.
Bikes are restricted on many of the hiking trails, but there are still plenty of options for those wanting to spend their time on two wheels. The Fountain Flat Drive is a popular spot because the terrain is gentle and the scenes are incredible. Lone Star Geyser Trail is another amazing trail that will leave you hungry for all that Yellowstone has to offer.
Water Sports
Yellowstone isn't just for those wanting to slow life down. It offers a wide range of water sports such as whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking, boating, swimming, and tubing. You can fish, wade, and relax during downtime and explore extreme adventures later (or not).
Whatever your speed or inclination, the different water locations across Yellowstone will be happy to accommodate your taste. Visit Gallatin, Yellowstone Rivers, Yellowstone Lake, Shoshone Lake, and others!
Wildlife Viewing
Yellowstone is known for having incredible wildlife. Moose, bears, bighorn sheep, pikas, and more roam the lands freely, offering up views that you'll remember forever. Sightings are especially common near the water sources, which means your visits to the iconic lakes and streams of this national park might just get an extra dose of excitement.
If your goal in visiting is specifically to see wildlife, it's important to know the best times. If you come in the spring, you will see baby animals and bears roaming freely. Fall is when you see the most elk (and fewer crowds), and winter will give you stunning shots of wolves in the snow. Regardless of the season, your best bet at seeing animals is being out and about during the early mornings and late evenings.
Scenic Drives
Hiking isn't the only way to see Yellowstone. This incredible piece of land has some scenic drives that will fill you with wonder. Beartooth Highway is iconic for providing astounding sights. The park's Figure-Eight Loop System is what you'll want to explore so that you don't miss any of the classic sights like Old Faithful and the Grand Canyon. If you hope to see a wide variety of wildlife, you might try the drive alon Lamar Valley or Hayden Valley. The point is, there is something for everybody, even without leaving your car. Don't ever underestimate Yellowstone National Park.

When you head off on your own, make sure you follow all park rules and safety guidelines. Not only is it smart, but doing this will also help you get the most out of your visit.
